The Familiars began in the depths of a "Zines and Literary Journals" class in our summer semester. Bogged down by the heat, and looking for a spark of inspiration - we were drawn together after discussing the personal influence the Kung Fu Panda series had on us.
It was in that moment in liminal space and time that we realized, "hey, we're all pretty f---ing weird, lets make something weird."

After class ended we realized the untapped potential, and that we couldn't stop there. We could be even weirder than our prototype suggests. The Familiars aims to be odd, delightful, eyebrow raising, and unconventional.

Today we're excited to bring The Familiars to others, and to hopefully share in our love of all that is peculiar. We hope that this journal will delight readers and highlight fantastic writers from all over.
Mission
To delight and thrill our readers with truly unique and out of the box writing that represents the diversity of both human experiences, but also the people behind those experiences. (And to do so in the oddest of ways.) We believe that writing is a pathway to our shared humanity, and it's important to us at The Familiars that the work we put out into the world serves a greater sense of community.
Vision
To explore the inner workings of your mind without barriers; to stir up the unsettling, the odd, and the peculiar within you. We want to push creative boundaries with surprising (sometimes shocking) originality and modernity. The Familiars is a space for truly strange writing to exist, some might say an outlet for the unconventional.
